Daily Stride # 12 - A key area of focus for me this training cycle.

Sometimes, I get lazy with my running.

From the outside looking in that seems ridiculous when you see the mileage or workouts I do, sometimes running upwards of 100 or 120 miles per week at my best.

However, it’s easy to run a lot when you have time to do it.

But, any good runner can tell you when she/he is focused and on point with their running. I can get sloppy sometimes, which I know has an effect (even if it’s 1-2%) on my performance over time.

While I can make a long list of what differentiates focused vs unfocused or sloppy versus neat training, I’ll provide one specific item to that I will be committing more time to in 2024 - Hill Sprints

There’s nothing easier than getting back from a run, hopping straight into the car, or rolling right into the house, and calling it a day. I’m guilty of it.

But, the day of training shouldn’t end after the run is done. At least it shouldn’t conclude so abruptly.

Save you the time I can spend harping on post-run training, I want to put an extra 10 minutes after 1-2 runs during the week to do my strides and my hill sprints.

I’m not getting younger, and with that my top-end speed sure isn’t getting any faster without effort. You’re probably in the same boat.

To maintain my speed and improve my body’s efficiency, I NEED to commit the extra time doing the little things like strides and hills to improve my endurance (including the marathon) work.

I’ve spent several years avoiding this aspect of my training (bad) due to laziness. I have no doubt this has left time and accomplishments on the table, as small as it may seem.

With this, I hope you’ll think more about what aspects you can easily integrate into your training (it’s probably strides and hills!).

Check out my post titled RUN FAST if you’re interested more on the specifics behind the whys and hows to perform these two aspects of training.
